Following the successful launch of the Chamber's Town Promotion Initiative on 20th May 2005, with a colourful cavalcade of costumed characters charting the town's long and fascinating story, one of this year's major initiatives is now in full swing.
Four times National Champion Town Crier Alistair Chisholm, who is a local Blue Badge tour guide, is making regular cries in the town centre each of which is followed by a half hour "taster" walk of part of the historic core of the town. Adults pay £1 for the walk but children are free.
All cries take place at the Town Pump in South Street which has been the town centre since Roman times and are performed every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 11am, Noon and 1pm.
Every Tuesday the Town Crier carries news of the town's story to other places. He has already cried its praises in Bath and Bournemouth and will be visiting Basingstoke, Woking, Kingston on Thames and Salisbury over the next few weeks.
Julian Nangle, Chairman of the Chamber's Town Promotion Sub-Committee, said: "Alistair's town crying is proving very popular and his short walks whet visitors' appetites for Dorchester. Many people are getting more than ever from their visit to our town."
